Sweater Weather

Sweater Weather

Written by Abby

Fall is my favorite season. I love the chilly weather. I love the golden sunsets. I love the changing and falling leaves. I love traveling home to Kentucky and betting on horses at the Keeneland in October. I love attending football games, the tailgating, and being cold enough to cuddle up in front of the fireplace. I love hot cider and apple picking and apple cider donuts. I love watching "You Got Mail" and admiring New York in the fall. I love the coziness of the season, being wrapped up in scarves and jackets, slipping into fluffy socks and boots, and staying warm in soft, comfy sweaters. Fall in Chicago meant wearing a coat starting in October, but in North Carolina, we can't wear sweaters until December and are usually comfortable enough to not need a light jacket. Fall is absolutely my favorite season to dress for.  Jeans, riding boots, corduroys, "fluffy socks" (as we jokingly call them) and blazers are my fashion wheelhouse.  And breaking out my sweaters from last season always feels like I have a brand new wardrobe without going shopping.  But every year when I assess my sweaters, some haven't held up as well as others in storage. Some of the wool has pilled and some colors look dated. Every year I buy a couple new sweaters that will be well worn into spring. Below I've picked some of my favorite sweaters coming into stores this fall. I have my eye on a few new ones, but it's hard to decide! If you're not in the market for any new sweaters this season, keep reading for some tips on how to take care and prolong the life of your sweaters for many seasons to come!

Sweater Care 101

1) Buy a Pill Remover/Fabric Shaver! Sweaters will pill eventually but you can do something about them. Use this fabric defuzzer to give your fuzzy sweaters a new life.

2)  Don't hang your sweaters! Preserve their shape by keeping them in drawers or on shelves, folded or rolled. If you do need to hang it, fold it over the hanger.

3) Store sweaters with packets or cedar or lavender to ward off bugs or moths that may eat holes in your sweaters.

4) Wash your sweater every four or five wears, unless you spill, sweat or are around smoke.

5) Stretched out sweater? Wet the garment and toss in the dryer! Monitor it closely as not to shrink it!
